I
decided to use our recently holiday home, a yurt on a Sussex campsite for my
Exploring Function exercise. A ‘one room fits all’ space provided everything
required for our week away; bedroom, living room, dining room and kitchen all
under one unhindered roof.
As
we did most of our cooking on a campfire outside the yurt, I chose to take the
shot from the kitchen area, omitting the cooker and focusing on the other, more
used elements. The wide angle used enabled me to encompass the edge of the
large bed as well as the futons which served as both beds and seating. The
small table and stools provide a dining area as well as being used, as shown by
the children, for crafts and other activities. The yurt’s functionality is also
displayed in the roof beam ‘towel rails’, the fireguard candleholder and the
use of space between beds for storage of clothing and toiletries.
Apart
from the obvious functions, I also wanted to demonstrate the more subtle
elements of yurt living. The natural materials used in both structure and
furnishings hint at a more simple, eco friendly way of life, as do the candles
and evidence of a large roof window shown by the shadows in the room. The soft
fabrics, colours and lighting provide a warm cosy feeling of being hugged by
the space, lending a calming, homely element to a week away.
